The PCN Action Scotland programme – funded by the Scottish Government – has delivered the largest-ever knowledge exchange on potato cyst nematode (PCN) in Scotland. These tiny soil pests are one of the biggest threats to our potato industry, but thanks to this multi-partner effort, growers are better equipped than ever.
Led by The James Hutton Institute and working with SAC Consulting, SRUC, Scottish Agronomy, SoilEssentials, BIOSS, the Plant Health Centre, and SASA, the programme wrapped up with a meeting at the Hutton’s Invergowrie campus.
PCN may be microscopic, but their impact is massive – potentially threatening Scotland’s seed potato industry by 2050 if left unchecked. While it’s early to see population drops due to crop rotation cycles, Dr James Price notes the programme is already changing the way growers tackle PCN, helping protect yields and the future of Scottish potatoes. 🥔💪
